American Coryn Rivera wins first stage in Schleusingen in an uphill sprint
The American rider of Team SUNWEB wins the first stage in Schleusingen in an uphill sprint finish ahead of Roxane Fournier (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) and last years overall winner Lisa Brennauer (Wiggle High5).
The first stage of this years Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour was held in the city of Schleusingen. Already at the start of the race, numerous spectators supported the 100 riders who started the 7 day stage race in hot, but good weather conditions today. The riders had to do 7 laps with an overall distance of 82,5 km on a rather flat course around the city of Schleusingen.
German rider Kathrin Hammes (Trek-Drops) won the first classification of the day which was at the same the only mountain classification of the stage and with that secured the OPEL-Schorr jersey for the leader in the mountain ranking. Later on in that lap, the first attack was set by Margarita Syradoeva (Nationalteam Russia), who had another try later on in the race and was named as the most courageous rider of the stage, wearing the Saalfelder Brauerei jersey during the second stage in Meiningen. The spectators saw few more attempts of a breakaway, but no rider or group was able to get a bigger gap than 30s. Rivera’s teammate, the Dutch Ellen van Dijk, who is also well known in Thuringia finishing 2nd overall in 2017, dominated the three sprint classifications and consequently put on the WNT sprint jersey at the award ceremony. As the finish came closer, Team SUNWEB formed a sprint train to bring their rider Coryn Rivera into the best position in the last kilometers of the race. After a close battle with Roxane Fournier, Rivera pushed hard to overtook her on the last meters to the line and secured the first win of the tour and also the yellow LOTTO Thüringen overall leaders jersey. Rivera said after the race: ‘We had a good plan today, and thanks to our strong team, we were able to reach our goals. I love uphill finishes like this, with narrow roads and cobble stones. It’s great to start a stage race in this way’.
